About YMCA Camp Nokomis
Since 1952, Camp Nokomis has offered a high quality camp experience for girls. During each of the four two-week sessions 170 campers are led by 60 staff members from around the world. The camp with its idyllic setting of sandy beach and wooded trails is located on 40 acres of Bear Island one of the largest islands on Lake Winnipesaukee. Camp Nokomis is accredited by the American Camp Association, licensed by the state of New Hampshire and operates in accordance with the YMCA of the USA best practices.
Comfortably settled in a sheltered cove Camp Nokomis' acreage is covered by unspoiled forest and carefully situated camp buildings. The screened wood-framed camper cabins accommodate eight to twelve campers and their two or three counselors. Modern toilet and shower facilities are located near the cabins. Well-balanced meals are served family-style to the camp community often accompanied by lively camp songs.
Program facilities include multi-purpose playing fields, tennis and basketball courts, archery range, a spacious craft shop and a log-built recreation lodge with a fieldstone fireplace. Camp Nokomis' program caters to each girl's individual abilities and needs while remaining sensitive to her age and interests. Instructional programs are taught by trained and properly certified staff providing the best and safest possible learning experience for the camper. Each girl chooses the activities in which she wishes to participate. Her schedule, which includes athletic and creative activities, will also have "rest times" and unscheduled periods when a variety of other activities may be pursued. Competitive opportunities exist but the emphasis is always on personal growth and enjoyment. To enhance the daily schedule special events are planned each session and in the evenings.
The Nokomis leadership is also dedicated to spiritual growth. Weekly non-denominational chapel services explore issues relevant to the lives of children. Camp Nokomis offers something rare in today's world: a consistent responsive and caring atmosphere enclosed in a beautiful natural environment. Camp friendships are enduring. Camp experiences develop confidence with which to confront the challenges of the outside world.
